Character

  1. t  Describe three key characters and how they change in the novel.

Gatsby – In the book, Gatsby shows himself as being rich and living the ideal life. He was living in a big house in East Egg that sat on the coast. Nick stated about Gatsby’s appearance as being very smart. He said “Gatsby, in a white flannel suit, silver shirt and a gold-coloured tie”.  The truth started to fall out when the reader can notice that Gatsby was making his life a lie to impress Daisy as she is the girls of his dreams. Gatsby left to go to World War 1 and found that when he found that when he came back Daisy had left him to be with Tom. This made Gatsby jealous and he changed his whole life to be a lie to attract Daisy’s love. Eventually the reader realises Gatsby is a determined boy with dreams of winning back Daisy. Gatsby held onto hope right until the end, this was represented as a green light, and it appeared many times being Gatsby’s form of hope for Daisy.“If it wasn’t for the mist we could see your home across the bay… You always  have a green light that burns at the end of your dock”. Gatsby bought the house across the harbour from Daisy so he could feel more connected to here and feel more hopeful. Gatsby threw parties every weekend to hope that Daisy would attend these and they could fall in love all over again. Jordan’s supports this when he says “He half expected her to walk into one of his parties”. A the end of the novel Nick stated “He must have looked up at an unfamiliar sky through frightening leaves and shivered as he found what a grotesque thing a rose is and how raw the sunlight was upon the scarcely created grass. A new world, material without being real, where poor ghosts, breathing dreams like air, drifted fortuitously about…”. This lets the reader know that Gatsby’s perspective of life fully changed as the grotesque rose is Daisy and he realises how fake she was as all he saw before was the beauty without seeing the thorns and how dangerous they can be.

Nick – Nick was the Narrator of the story and he was happy to have been moving to New York from the middle east after WW1. In New York Nick meets a lot of new people that were more free-spirited then himself which made Nick think he wasn’t good enough and started to compare himself to others. He calls himself the most nonjudgmental person whereas the only person he doesn’t judge is Gatsby. Once Mertyl, Gatsby and Wilson all died he became angry with himself that he was protecting Gatsby’s legacy against a harsh society

Daisy – Daisy left Gatsby because he was a poor man and didn’t belong with poor as she was from a rich family. She then went to Tom Buchanan for money and left Gatsby while he was at war. She didn’t want to admit to her mistakes when Nick invited her to his house with Gatsby although she knew that she had feelings for Gatsby as soon as they made eye contact. When Gatsby was throwing shirts down to Daisy she started to cry but stated ‘It makes me sad because I’ve never seen such, such beautiful shirts before.’ although there was another meaning to her crying which she covered up with the previous statement
