Setting

New York City: New York is where most of the rich spend their time because they eat shop drink and smoke whenever they want. New York slightly represents the “American Dream” a place where wealth, hope and enormous possibility can occur. When Nick first went to New York he described it as a “glowing sunshine,” and the air on Fifth Avenue is “warm and soft, almost pastoral”.

East Egg: East Egg is based around old money which means the people who live here have inherited money from relatives and it is also classed as the upper class of the two “eggs”. People here are generally cocky and mean. Tom and Daisy live here in a house on the harbour.

West Egg: West Egg is based around new money which means the people who live here have made their own money which generally is made from illegally selling drugs alcohol. These people are classed as “wannabe money” or “dirty money”. Fitzgerald describes West Egg as “less fashionable” with “wide lawns and friendly trees”

Valley of Ashes: Valley of Ashes sits between the two Eggs and New York City. It is filled with lower class people that work very hard daily. Fitzgerald described the Valley of Ashes by saying “This is a valley of ashes – a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke”.
